Naturel - The Elk by vervex Naturel - The Elk by vervex
The Elk (alternative title Naturel, French for natural) is one of the first paintings I created with the Luminescent project in mind. Cervidae are a recurring occurrence in current Western graphic design trends and they can be found in large numbers on prints and shirts. I decided to create my own interpretation of this popular theme.

This illustration depicts an elk (also known as wapiti), one of the largest species of deer, on whose antlers magnolia are growing. Perched on one antler, a blue jay stands below the letters spelling out the word "naturel".

I chose the elk among all deer because of their stature and radiance. Beautiful and powerful, the elk is a fit figure to represent nature's spirit and power. In various cultures, especially in North American indigenous tribes such as the Lakota people, elks were regarded as symbols of power, sexual prowess and courage. In heraldry, stags are a common sight on coats of arms and in Japan, deer are sometimes considered messengers of the gods.

The blooming magnolia was a choice based on a splendid floral tree I encountered last spring while I was taking a casual walk in my neighbourhood. At the time I did not know what flower it was but I was completely mesmerized by the tree's beautiful light pink flowers. They emanated a pleasant fragrance. Later on, I stumbled upon a website about flowers and I learned what I had seen that day was a magnolia tree. The plant seemed like a good fit to represent the beauty and power of nature which awakens at the end of winter.

The blue jay resting on the elk's antlers was a personal choice; these majestic birds are common in Canada and they bring a smile to my lips every time I catch sight of one.

The overall piece is an Ode to nature. It embodies the beauty, force and unity of the forests, valleys and mountains, as well as its inhabitants. In spite of how humans have been treating the natural world, it endures and persists. I have hope that someday all of humanity will understand the importance of nature and strive to protect this divine force instead of mistreating in the name of profit.
